Oakland will be the first to reap the benefits of the cannabis industry here in the states. There is hope out there still.

sorry, but from the text I dont get it so I have to ask:
does this mean Oakland taxed RECREATIONAL marihuana? like the coffeeshops in the netherlands, or did they just tax the medical marihuana?

I think that it refers to cannabis used for non-medical social reasons.

It is just talking about the medical dispensaries within the city limits of Oakland. This is the only "cannabusiness" that is legal in the state of California. It is a break through for cannabis community in the states where you will be able to see the benefits of taxation. But this is only a start. Hopefully it will get people thinking if we make this kind of money off the medicinal business then what kind of money can we make off the recreational use of cannabis. It is all a money game and now there will be a financial model for people in power to look at and see the potential of taxation(both recreational and medicinal).

Is it just me who thinks taxing peoples' medication is a tad barbaric?

I normally would agree, if this tax was imposed as a way to stifle the cannabusiness. But this taxation was voted on the by the people of Oakland. The people said tax us. So be it. It is progress in the cannabis movement so I can not complain.
