Cloning

Nobody's ever told me something about cloning: how long do you need to veg the clones for?

Suppose I've got a nice indica strain like northern lights, I've heard that flowers in like 6-8 weeks. But how long would I have to veg a clone before allowing it to flower?

a month???

seems that i read most often that plants are left in veg for about a month on average. Not sure if thats a month from when the clone is fully rooted or from when its cuts.

Well I'd only be concerned with once they're fully rooted, as I wouldn't introduce my plants to soil until they've got good firm roots in some propagation foam or something.

I wish there was a nice good definitive guide out there that talks about all the various strains and how they grow. And if there was, I wish I had it. =P

You can veg. your clones as little or as long as you like. I assume you already know if it's a male or female right? Since NLs are mainly indica, and grow short and stout, I would veg. for a week under 18/6, letting the clones get established to their new surroundings, then switch over to 12/12. With sativas, right to 12/12, since they grow so tall. Hope that helps. AzLaker

laker....why would someone want to veg for a month? i know i've read that alot just can't recall the context. What about ScrOG setups and the like, where you are topping the plant(s) to create more bud sites? Would a longer veg. be needed for that or just do it during flowering (12/12)?

With a scrog set-up, they want as many plants in a confined space as possible. Putting them on a 12/12 from the get go ensures short uniformed plants, producing a short FAT cola, without to much side branching. Also, I think it depends on the style you're comfortable with. AzLaker

The longer you veg the more buds you get, I would veg for at least a month from a clon to from seed. I tried to flower a plant that was too young before and it stunted its growth and didn't start making buds until the fourth week on 12/12. If you start plants on a 12/12 they will veg, they cant just stary making buds, and yea that will stunt your plants growth and yield.

ScrOG(screen of green) is wrote like that because of SOG, but the two are nothing alike AZ you described a SOG(sea of green). A scrog setup is best done in a one plant setup, what you do is you take chicken wire and make a cage for your plant usually 3' by 3', as the plant grows it will try to grow out of the cage, selectively top it off, or push inside. This will cause more branching, wich makes nodes, wich make buds. Keep toping and pusing it inside the cage. You need to veg scrog longer for it to make a higher yield(more nodes = more buds). When you put it on the 12/12 just let it go wild, I have been told to remove the big fan leaves because it can cause bud rot in the later flowering stages. I you veg long enough you could have a yield thats around 3x the norm.

erm...sorry I gotta (once again :/) disagree Ameri.

SOG = High amount of smaller plants grown close together
SCROG - basically the same but with main cola's grown through netting for higher yield

Well isn't the point of screen of green just to focus all your light on just the cola and buds? I'd think it wouldn't matter how many plants you used, wether it be one or a roomful.

Not really, it's a method using multiple plants normally 10 at least. It's not an all around cage its a single screen over the top.

Well, I understand how it's done, but isn't the point simply to make a canopy of bud to focus all the light on the flowers?

Unless it means something else where you live, the picture A.S. used, that was a ScrOG plant. And this is a multiple plant scrog:

I would only call it a scrog if it was multi plant personally. Don't really see the point in caging a single plant either, surely just trimming and pruning would be easier?

It doesn't really matter if you use just a top screen or a fully enclosed screenyou are essentially doing the same things, that person was topping their plants out at the top of the screen, and Im sure that they pruned some bottom branches, thats the same thing without sid screens.
