I've had several conversations with bud-tenders and regulars, and their opinion on increased prices is that it could be one or more of the following:
1. Distributors charging more per kilo, from 5000e to 8000e+ as an example. The reasons could be multiple although I think it comes down to two - greed and paranoia about the future (longer prison sentences for growers).
2. C/S owners may have the same reasons as stated above, with the addition that because some shops are charging 15e and even 17.50e per gram, the rest follow suit. Charge what the market will bear and all that.

To be quite honest, I would probably do the same. If I thought there was going to be a major shift in policy which in turn meant reduced revenue, what else is there to do? Same applies to increased wholesale prices - pass it on to the customer.

I predicted/theorized that the first C/S to charge 20e per gram would be in 2012. With some shops charging 17.50 (for Neville's Haze), I just might be right. Less than 2 years ago Quazar was going for 15e, now it's 17e+. If the laws change forbidding foreigners from buying, 20e will be this year with a possibility of 25e by 2012/13 (market demand and all that).
Time will tell.

I doubt that blocking tourists from CS will result in a hike in prices. Imo 2 things will happen:
- A lot of coffeeshops close (the locals don't need 200 coffeeshops) and the demand actually will go down.
- As the demand for exotic and high quality buds is mostly tourism/export driven the vast majority of bud available will be White Widow and Hindu Kush.

About Basjoe now. Ever since I've been in A'dam a few months ago I have been hearing very good things at this forum about Basjoe. So I decide to go specially during the afternoon (as you won't ever find it open in the morning; this should have been the first "alarm bell"). It was the middle of October when I went there and boy was it a total waste. The black kid as also stated above was staring at me so hard and unpleasant that I almost started a fight in there (he really should NOT look at customers like that no matter how stoned he is if he wants to keep all his teeth), the menu was pretty much empty with only the Bas Special available, a badly flushed pineapple strain for over 12e then (it must have been 13 or 14, I don't remember exactly but I sure remember it was expensive). In other words Basjoe is for me a barely average coffeeshop. What do you like there? Is there (apart from the Terminator) any killer weed that is bringing all the people there? I mean from the reviews here one would think that Basjoes is in the same league as Grey Area which is definitely NOT.

my opinion is the same. the only really special there is the terminator. the weed is just average but more expesive as at barney's!!! .
the atomosphere there is strange sometimes, I never felt really welcome there.
but I didn't care too much about that as I stopped there for the terminator.

btw the shops I always feel welcome are katsu and papillon.

This place seems to be very polarizing, a la Grey Area. I'll have to find out for myself in about a week. :D

Still a little off topic (my bad)... :)
Although I agree that a majority of shops would close, the demand for quality gear shouldn't diminish, why would it? Some strains, which will remain nameless, are IMHO over-hyped, which in turn creates a stir among the 'T' crowd, which leads to 15e+ per gram. Probably would be a different story without the hype. All things considered, quite a mark-up given that weed can cost less than 0.50e per gram to grow.

Mainly the staff, atmosphere, and gear.

Basjoe and Grey Area aren't in the same league because both offer totally different experiences. One is in the NL and one in the AL (baseball metaphor).
I'll admit that recent visits have been somewhat disappointing - out of Amnesia, which is usually very good; out of Bas Special one time and another the quality was substandard. If they grew their own I would find it easier to criticize, and changing distributors probably isn't that easy (just a guess). Who knows what's next?

I only know three people who work there and none of them would antagonize or show disrespect, so it must be one of the underlings. If this happens again, mention it to James, or not.

Basjoe is a favourite among a small hard core group on this forum. My guess is that they like the products and they especially like the owners/vibe/atmosphere. There seems to be a strong bond there. They are hospitable towards toke and talks there.

But if you look outside of ACD, nobody ever even heard of Basjoe. It is as well known as De Kroon or De Supermarkt or a.n.other coffeeshop <insert name here>.

I think all the above could easily apply to most other coffeeshops. A few go there and like the vibe and keep going back and convince others to.

But IMO I also think the product is average to good. It's not crap but it's not stellar either, nowhere near.

The place is OK to chill. I hear you on the weird stares - I got that from James. One might conclude he could be gay from the amount of stares he gave me :D Nothing wrong with that, I'm not interested thanks.

I first went into Basjoe knowing nothing about James or Leo but I felt I was one of the family from the off, the Diesel I had last year was pretty much the stinkiest greasiest diesels I've smoked (and I've smoked a fair few), the Orange Bud is near enough a perfect example of that strain (again I've smoked a fair few OB's) same with the Jack H and dont forget the hashes, I'm quite sad that everyone doesn't get Basjoe like I and many others do as I'm sure it would become a fave of theirs if they enjoyed it like the other 156 people have.

I hear ya on that orange bud Boner. I bought this around a year ago and was impressed.

And it's tough to find any old orange bud in Amsterdam these days, regardless of quality.

I'm not a fanboy of Basjoe but I have to say that I've never been disappointed by the quality of the product and the service.
I bought there, on 4 different visits, Orange Bud (really good), Jack Herrer (not outstanding but still good), Royal Hash (fucking good) and Bas Special (I think it was something like Strawberry Cough, really good and covered by trichromes)

i have to say i really like Basjoes, i've been reading a few people slating the place recently talking about their menu, the prices and decor. first let me say and this is just my opinion. 1) I actually like their menu for its old school no nonsense selection (reminds me of how things used to be before it all turned commercial) the menu may not be big in quantity but i would say they are one of the best for quality and what i mean by that is if you go there 10 times 8 out of the 10 times you will not be disappointed with the quality of the product what you purchased. i couldnt say the same for 90% of other coffeeshops out there ( i.e hunters, barneys, greenhouse and green place). 2) i find the prices in there quite reasonable when you compare it to everywhere else in the red light district, and who cares if a looza is 2.50e stop being tight and save for a while longer before you next go on holiday, it makes the whole experience a lot better trust me.. 3) i love the decor in there cause everything aint made of stainless steel and it doesnt have 101 different bright colours everywhere. 4) and finally i think the atmosphere in there is perfect for just chilling and smoking a spliff especially if your lucky enough to get a seat by the window and watch the world go by. and i dont care what anybody says james is by far the best bud tender in the whole of the dam!! ok rant over lol

cool
