Guess the 1990s Coffeeshop

Post by Lemming »

These are from the amazing video posted on here a while ago.

How about this one? The number on the wall appears to be 309. The street name looks a bit like Rozengracht but probably isn't. There may be two shops here.

This one appears to be called Petit Restaurant Coffeeshop Scaramouche. Recognise it? Address?

No Way Out

Euro. Probably took Guilders.

Got loads more but these will do for starters.

The shop next door in the photo, Simone, is still there today.

I'm getting these addresses from locals on reddit. Big thanks to them on the r/amsterdam subreddit.

Coffeeshop No Way Out - Frederik Hendrikstraat 118, 1052 JB, Amsterdam

Coffeeshop Euro - Marnixstraat 92, 1015 VZ, Amsterdam
(Which is now Coffeeshop Bronx)

Nice one @avfc-herbalist! Brilliant detective work.
I should've spotted that Euro was Bronx. It's a distinctive shape.
Do we have a name for the shop at Herengracht 309? Looks like De Zoete Inval to me.

Here's another one for you. Its name is Coffee Shop Sky International or Inter Sky.

... could it be an early predecessor of Lost in Amsterdam? Anyone remember what was there before the bar?

You could very well be spot on there @Lemming - I found this other photo

Zooming in on the property next door you can make out the number 19. Lost in Amsterdam is 19 Neiewendijk, 19a I believe. Zooming in on street view shows the next door to now be 19b and c.

And the brickwork and details to the left look exactly the same!

Yes, sure looks like Lost in Amsterdam. In my (totally fucked) memory, Lost popped up one day in a place where I'd never noticed a coffeeshop. Anyone remember what was there before? Or was it indeed Sky?

Anyone have any opinions on what this sign says?

Looks like "De Zoete Inval" to me but I'm not sure.

Some more hard to read signs.

An easier one to start:
Image

This one looks like "Coffeeshop Bistro Bolle Beer" to me. The address was Kloveniersburgwal 38-B (basement) I think.

How about this one? Coffeeshop something Eethuis. Somewhere around Staatsliedenbuurt maybe?
Image

This one is on a corner of Ruysdaelkade. Dunno which corner. Looks distinctive but I can't find it.
Image

Again, no idea. Might be north end of Marnixstraat?
Image

The address of this one is Nieuwendijk 4 but no idea of the name.

I agree that it’s De Zoete Inval. Google translates it to “The Sweet Insight” in English. According to wiktionary zoete inval can also mean “a place where all is welcome”. Very cool name for a Coffeeshop.
