Nature vs Nurture

Post by chilly1952 »

I get caught up in the strain thing as the major factor in the quality of the weed. IMHO genetics gives the plant the ability to produce quality and specific attributes associated with the strain. The growth environment, curing, freshness, etc. also impact the quality of what is rolled into a joint. Besides the overall quality of the weed, can these factors be manipulated to accentuate specific attributes of the buzz?

you can give food colouring into the water and the plant/buds will turn into the color you chose, saw someone who did it on a german grower board, nothing bad with the high/taste or anything else but who knows if food coloring is good for your lung? to be honest I wouldnt do it or at least very very very very little....

dont know of anything else so far sorry ;)

 sorry I dont believe that for 1 minute, the flushing process flushes everything that isn't supposed to be there out of the plant/buds.

then the guy is a very good liar, sorry if I felt for it....will try to find the thread about it.

edit:
and there it is! he didnt gave it during they were flowering, but after he cut them off he put them into water with food colouring, I didnt remember that right :)

Short answer = YES!!!

First of all, even with so-called "uniform" strains there can be some amount of variation in the genetics.

Ignoring the genetic variations, a grower, can do other things to alter the cannabinoid profile of their grass, such as:

1) Time at which you harvest. (or methodology of when to havest).
That is, what proportion of trichomes are amber/cloudy/clear, when you havest. Varying this methodology can substantially alter the final product.
(In the old days it was the percentage of hairs that were orange, but that is so old-skool. :D Also, I prefer the trichome method)

If you are unsure (or want to experiment) then you might want to take some of the buds at one level of maturity and others at another level to see how it affect that particluar variety and which best suits your preferences.

2) Method of curing. (and or storage)
THC can be degraded by both light and heat. I have seen growers, grow some good bud, and then have it f*cked up because they did not cure/store it well.

I have found that the "hang dry" for about 7-10 days in relatively low humidty environment, then put in mason jars, then stored in cool dark place for a few months, works well. Some folks will, periodically, for the next month (or two), then occasionally open the mason jars, for a short time. Then, after that, they only open the jars when taking out something to smoke.

Again, you will have to find a method you like.

There might be other things you can do to alter the cannabinoid profiles.
I have experimented with heat stress in a last week, UVB light suppliment in the last few weeks, and so on, with mixed results.

I'm curious of what can be done with LED lighting spectrum control, CO2 enrichment, nutrient and temperature variations. Some of these new grow chambers on the market afford the ability to precisely control the environment through the growth cycle. Are we going to see better weed? With all this technology in addition to the latest genetics why do we all think the weed of today is not as good as the "Redbud I got back in '74" or whatever that fav was that we all have? Is it the memory or the new weed that's getting weaker?

Well, as for the Redbud back in '74, people's recollection is iften distorted over time. (As in, the older I get the better I used to be....ha ha ha). However, to be fair, there might have been (and indeed there were) some really special strains, which may have been lost.

Good Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Thai, Mexican, Jamaican, Hawaiian, Afghan, Indian, African, Pakistani, and other grasses were around then, as well as some not so good ones. There was a great deal of variation. I was lucky to have a dealer across the street, another one, two doors down, another 5 doors down, and another at the end of the block, so I usually had access to some great grass/hash.

BUT, modern breeders have also created some really good grasses, so who knows? I do think that, due to the expertise and professionalism of modern breeders, there tends to be much more uniformity within the strains, and that is a good thing.

In 1979, I remember reading an article, in the Vancouver Sun Weekend Suppliment, with cops stating that "The weed of today is 10 times stronger than it was in the hippie generation". Interesting how this EXACT SAME BULLSHIT is repeated by prohibitionists, today!! EXcept they, now, say that the weed of today is 10 times stronger than the weed of the 70's and 80's. If true, then that would mean todays weed is 100 times as strong as in the hippie days.....Complete bullshit!

I have no experience with LED's, but if they work for you, then stick with them. CO2 supplimentation can aid in growth, however, if you do this you MUST have good ventilation, and have your setup be such that NONE of your living space will be, in any way, contaminated with the CO2. CO2 is a poison, and it can kill you, silently. My recommendation is DO NOT use CO2 if you grow inside your home! Also, when entering a grow area, supplimented with CO2, first ensure that you have stopped the CO2 flow, well before you enter, AND that you have completely ventilated the CO2 out of the room before entering it. Anoxia can happen very quickly, and NO crop is worth dying for.

Good luck
