From my 2nd visit (around 1996) I remember walking to a shop early one morning, it was more like a diner than a rustic coffeeshop. I seem to recall blue and chrome details. It was at the end of the row and there was a slight right turn before entering and the buildings were more modern. I also remember some open space in front of the building. From my extensive research it's possible it could've been Haussmann 2, which is now Pancake Corner near Terps 2.
I suspect we walked up Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen, before turning the slight right to enter.
Aside from the ACD entry I can find nothing about this place. Does anyone remember it? What years was it open? Surely not photos but any info at all may help to plug some gaps in my memory. Or prove that memory is essentially flawed and we are all just imaginations of ourselves. Or that I shouldn't be smashing this Blue Lobster at 6am
Managed to acquire a copy of Mellow Pages 3rd edition recently mate and you'll never guess what coffeeshop is in it

Haha no way! And a picture too! Thanks so much for looking mate, unfortunately it kinda rules out my theory, the place pictured is way too swanky as you say. I think at some point, after 30 years or so, I'll have to admit defeat in matching my memories with reality

I think it was the first Grasshopper at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 59.
That is the Grasshopper at number 59 which later had a conservatory added. You can tell by the window styles and long top panel. I have added an earlier image from '84 showing the area rather run down, you can just read 'the Grass-Hopper' on the window panes and see a small leaf just under it. I've also added an enlarged close up of the design to make it easier to see.

Here's a pic of Karel Appel I and II side by side from the mid 1980's, nice palm trees outside, must be summer, cool beer and a cool smoke whilst watching the world go by. Happy days!

also Joy Stick from mid 80's too, the premises are still being used today as coffeeshop Babylon.

Here's a long gone mid 1980's Prix d'Ami located at Waterlooplein,361 pre-dating the closed Coffeshop Smoosie of the same location. This property is now a restaurant.

Interestingly next door but one at 345 is now Green House Namaste. In the larger picture from the 80's you can see that number 345 is a conventional cafe coffee house. I don't know when this one evolved from cafe to a licensed coffeeshop?
The first floor windows of these properties are still the same today (give or take a fresh coat of paint or two)

Here's a couple more that are currently not so long gone but as the forum ages they will be
Bushman was a favourite of mine, really liked the vibe and decor, when I dropped by the produce was good and reliable.

Their menu is a stark reminder of the paltry offerings at most coffeeshops back in the day. What year would that book be?
