Trains/Trams

Has anyone ever noticed that they rarely check to see if you have a ticket, especially on the trains?

Been on the Schipol-Central route a few times along with the Central-Bijlmer (ArenA) line and I have always bought my ticket before boaring the train.
Not once has anyone stopped to check my ticket either on the train or at the train stations.
Only talking about a few Euros so it's not like I've wasted a lot of money but I'm only travelling on fairly short runs (10-15 minutes from point A to point B).
I don't know if there are penalties for being on a train without a ticket in Amsterdam, all I can say is that in the UK, your ticket costs more to buy on the train than at the train station office (to be honest though ticket checks are few and far between on the train routes that I use on any sort of regular basis.)

I've seen someone get done on the train without a ticket.

It is fairly rare but it has happened to me a few times on various trips. I remember one time, back when the ticket machines were more confusing we had accidently bought junior/discount tickets. The lady let us off because we were silly tourists with no change...lucky I guess...she could have fined us.

It's not as rare as ya think. the Schipol line is a short busy run and just too hard to cover, but longer distance will have somebody somewhere checking. As for the trams, there's a rambling hit team for checking those...normally about 4 to 6 ppl that all jump on a tram at once covering all exits, then check everybodies ticket. Pretty surprising if yer not expecting it, reminded me of home ...for some reason.

Wasn't suggesting doing it, just noticed it. Even when I went to Haarlem no one checked my ticket.

I was going to say that the only time my tickets have ever been checked are on the 2 trips to Haarlem I have done.

I've had my ticket a few times also.
I always buy one as I want to be a good guest for my tolerant and gracious host.
