Terschelling

Hi, I was thinking of making a quick trip through Friesland on my next (and possibly final with the weitpass) trip to the Netherlands and was considering stopping by Terschelling, specifically the StayOK Hostel in West Terschelling. Does anyone have any experience with the hostel or the Friesland islands in summer(August)? Is it gonna be packed or is there still gonna be enough room to be in peace(as in, to be able to smoke without annoying anyone else)? From Google satellite, it looks pretty sparsely populated but I have nightmares of arriving to find an island full of screaming children, fat tourists and over-tanned eurotrash in Speedos.

Don't start this crap again. I don't hate Europeans obviously- I'm referring to a particular clique, like the American fratboy, that is pretty annoying. But thanks for being so helpful.

Well, I'm glad you'd rather dispense snark and insults than advice and information to your fellow traveler. Silly me, thinking I might get useful tips from friendly and knowledgeable folks here; I guess I should have known better.

I have never been to Terschelling, but from what I've seen of Friesland, it's pretty conservative. I'd guess, like Winnie, that you'll find mostly German and Dutch tourists, and probably with very wholesome-looking families who would look a bit askance at you if you looked like a stoner, let alone smoked in their vicinity. There are, as you can see from the index here, relatively few coffeeshops in Friesland, most of them in Leeuwarden. And if you google a bit you find stories about police raiding private parties for the hell of it, or checks with dogs on cars going to the islands. Mostly in Dutch, however.

The only place in Friesland I know a bit is Lemmer, which is basically a village with one street masquerading as a town. Amusingly, at least for me, the only pictures I've ever put up on a hosting site that have been taken by others are the ones tagged with the name of the place, as there are obviously local patriots desperate for anything that they can point to. The only tourist attraction, apart from the sailing, is something that proudly claims to be the largest steam-pumping mill ever built, and is presumably riveting for enthusiasts of such things.

Terschelling appears a bit more lively, but do let us know how you get on. If you go.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely wouldn't smoke in public unless I was far enough away from others to be discrete. I figure as long as there are spots to get away from the crowds, we should be all right. I'll update the thread when I get back for those who might be curious.

Hmmmm, the Coffeeshop Menus page has menus for Leeuwarden, but none for Terschelling.
If you have a camera, ask first and get some menu pictures. I would love to add a new town to the page.

The only Frisian island I know by recommendation is Texel which is the biggest and most populated.
Still fairly quiet and has a nature reserve feel to it and isolated spots for a smoke.
Easy to get to by ferry from Den Helder and a decent choice of accommodation.
August = summer holidays so quite a lot of visitors.

The boat from Harlingen drops you off right across from the VVV and there are several bike rental kiosks nearby.
We were there during the Oerol Festival one June ...plenty of getaway space , some nice nice beaches,dune areas
forests . There is car traffic on Terschelling . Schiermonnikoog,Vlieland a bit more isolated ...I don't know about Fryslan being conservative , even by Dutch standards, but Leeuwarden has the best Non AMS Coffeeshop scene we've visited.

I spent 2 days there a year or so back.

Terschelling is relatively small, with some neat homes and a small village or two. One can pretty much ride the entire island on a bike in a day. It's off the North Sea, so it ain't exactly Biarritz. I understand it's pretty jammed with day trippers over the summer, I was there in mid-May. There certainly wasn't any coffeeshops there, but was a decent beer bar.

Bike hires are easy.

Nature and historical fishing grounds are the attraction, with some novel birds and such.

The neat thing about Friesland is things like Dokkum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dokkum) and Hindeloopen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindeloopen), which are seriously off the beaten track, but pretty much on the way to Terschelling. Hindeloopen also has the national speedskating museum, which, while rustic, is definitely worth a stop.

You might want to try Beerenburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beerenburg) while you're there. It's a novel offshoot of jenever.

I've found some dutch speak low of Friesiens, but meh. That just sounds like human behavior to this Canadian. We diss the shit out of each other the same sort of ways, as do the Amaricans.

Eurotrash ie loud annoying usually pretty well off not your average European , usually found in places like Cannes , Malaga etc lol
