So i have been here a month, have always parked my bike downstairs along with the other residents bikes. Went outside to find our bikes gone, spoke to the downstairs neighbor and she says here bike went missing the night before but she has been meaning to call the place the government take all the in pounded bikes.

any idea how to get hold of this place and what the process to get a bike back is if it has been taken?

you have to go down there,tell there when and where the bike went,and a discription,they charge you 10e,(last time i went anyway)
oh and you got to take the key for the lock and id
the do code stamp it for you tho,handy if it gets stolen again

thank you for the info dude! I spoke to them on the phone just after posting and they say no bikes were removed from our area in the last 24hrs so they dont have it....... probably stolen. I got the thing for less than 100euro with both locks and lights from a shady shop at waterlooplien market, so not that fussed, just a small annoyance! Guess now i can tell people i have had my bike nicked in Amsterdam

Anyway i am over it and need to go find a new bike, i bought the first one just for a cheap get a bout because i did not thing i would be here for more than 3 months. Now i think i will be here for 9months - year so i am happy to invest a little more in a better bike...... didn't feel the safest on my shitty second hand thing.

So it's my lady friends birthday in 10 days and her bike was taken too and i figured i would get us new bikes as a gift for her birthday. I've notices some alright looking bikes for sale at the albert cuyp market, the look brand new for 150 - 200 euro, which is the price range i had in mind for buying a new bike.

Any other suggestions on a good place to pick up a well maintained, well looked after second hand bike, or a good 150- 200euro new bike?

the hema sometimes have some quite nice ones,and the praxis too,i wouldnt pay alot tho they always getting nicked,ali the african guy on wartelooplein best on there
there a place on dappamarkt too,prob be cheaper than the cuyp,everything cheaper on the dappa,same quality too

my advise is just buy as cheap as possible,cause it wont be a such an issue when its stolen

@elasticband, also invest in D locks and spend about e50 each. Nothings thief proof but a quality lock will usualy encourage them to find something easier .

not a good idea imo

I know all about that caper but a D lock is the one thats kept my bikes safe for years, in Central London. Masterlock do make some cheap rubbish, I did say go for quality. The bike thieves favourite tool round here is bolt croppers for the cables and cheap chains.

What is a good idea iyo ?

Dutch friends told me that thieves tend not to bother tampering with Abus locks.

What I call D locks

I meant the brand name rather than a particular type of lock

I know winnie, I use an Arbus, but you see that their most secure locks are the D/U lock, as long as it's through the frame and a strong point. For at home I have one of their anchor points and at my daughters house I filled a bucket with cement and set an old cheap D lock into it and that makes a fine anchorage. ; and that trick on the video with the biro wont work on decent quality lock.

Abus D-Locks are the best says the "Stiftung Warentest" too. Only 5 locks were judged as good in their lastes test. The best were two Abus D-Locks with Abus Plus-Keys, you can't open with a picking tool. But I think those locks will be the same value as your amsterdam bike.

Abus says invest 10% of your bikes value in a lock on their homepage.
I never leave my bike somewhere I can't keep an eye on it, even not in the Biergarden at home.

Every city has bikes and bike thieves man it's not something unique to Amsterdam .
