A friend of mine ordered seeds from his usual place, which usually come through the post in a plain envelope. This time round he received a card from RM while he was out, saying he needed to sign for a package.

I know it's not illegal for him to possess the package but is it wise to collect or just write it off. It could be genuine or is it a trap?

There are no legal issues with seeds in the UK except in regards to germination of them. He can pick them up without any fear of getting busted.

I'd contact the senders and ask if they require the package to be signed for. If not then the authorities know your mates address anyway and presumably the contents of the package too. With that knowledge a knock on the door may be forthcoming. Bit of a pisser really. Maybe he can pick them up and sell them on.

Why would be get a knock on the door ? He missed the parcel now has to collect or go online and get it redelivered which is Royal Mail procedure .

If the parcel delivery service requires a signature on delivery, he's inviting a knock, yes?
I've had several deliveries and each time they required a signature.
If I missed delivery, a note would be in the box instructing me to sign for the package/envelope at the Post Office.
Tell your mate to get off his arse, sign for those seeds, and NOT germinate them...

I think he means that previously no signature was required for delivery but this time it does. Checking the senders requirement for a signature would help him determine whether it is an innocent requirement or someone digging a bit deeper. As you say Cisco, no illegality in possession of seeds, but nobody I know keeps them as ornaments.

I dunno what's so hard about this ? He missed the package because be was out , so for the postal service to get the package to be redelivered or picked up he has to go to the PO and sign to prove who you are or go online and get them redelivered , simples and postal procedure

Not when it usually just gets posted through the door like a letter. The point was as sailor59 said - previously no signature was required so he was concerned it was a suspicious change of procedure.
