Dumb ? about sex

I have seen photos on this site of plants grown from seeds, found in buds they had from there travels in Amsterdam. My dumb question is, how do you tell if the plant is a female with out going to flower or are these "stressed seed" feminized naturally :?:

Most of the time I would think that seeds found like this are fuck ups in a grow room. Maybe someone had a male in there. Maybe another plant or the plant itself was a hermaphrodite. The problem with seeds like this is you don't know what you are getting. They could have have four strains and one hermied or was male and you would have a cross. Hermie traits could also or more likely be passed on this way. I have seen good plants grown out this way. My side of the lake most people do this. Collect seeds from bud they liked. Not the best system.

Telling sex is harder. Regular seeds or bag seed like this people usually wait until flower and castrate the males. People under lights with regular seeds usually take cuttings and flower them out quickly, before the main plants flower. If the cutting is male the plant will be. Hermies can make both these techniques harder as they can hermie/flower later.
Feminised seeds and you don't worry about that but are not good for breeding as they likely carry a Hermie gene and buying breeding these seeds you may make the hermie trait stronger. (I am not a professional feminised seed grower though and the feminised part seems to be consensus)

Hope it helped.

Short answer, you can't tell what sex a plant will be until it's sexed, which occurs during flowering.
If you acquire feminized seeds, especially from a reputable source, you basically know they will be female, however...... there is always a chance one or more of them turn hermie (genetics, stress, etc...) it's the nature of the beast, one of the caveats for messing with mother nature. Feminized seeds don't occur naturally, they've been chemically altered.
As Slip & Sal so eloquently stated ref. how seeds found in buds purchased in Amsterdam (bag seed) came to be - spot on... :)
I've been gifted a few bag seeds from Amsterdam, thanks Gapie, OG18 was the strain. All female, two phenos (the indica was the keeper), and a decent sized yield. I considered myself fortunate because these plants could have turned out to have been real duds. Again, thanks G-man... :)

Lastly, nothing dumb about your question, it's the answers given that could be considered dumb, perhaps my answer? ;) :)
Happy Sexing...

I think not asking questions is dumb.

UR by now you should at least know eloquence isn't practised much by me. :P

Thanks for your replies, :) I am still curios about results that others have gotten with "bonus seeds" 8) UR has two for two.  I have a theory that stressed seeds are female for preservation of the plant, but I'm just an arm chair observer this and $1.65 will get you a cup of coffee at the Dunkin Donuts

You can tell female plants before flower during late veg they should start throwing out pre flowers/pistils

Hey Cisco... :)
Not to be splitting hairs  ... what about hermies? ...and then there's that. ;)
Also, what is your definition of late veg? From my studies, cannabis can remain in vegetation indefinitely, so when is late? Hello..........
From my understanding, "pre-flowering" a plant is to put the plant into a semi-flowering state (14-16 hour light cycle for a short period of time). A reason for doing this is to determine the sex without going into full flowering; easier to revert the plant to vegetation, mainly (not exclusively) for the process of selecting clone mothers.

To reiterate, no way to know 100% the sex of the plant without some form of flowering, whether pre or semi... not from seed, not from veg, not from the bud it was plucked from... :)
Isn't science wonderful? ;)

cisco is right ..and what about hermies?...ya use shit seeds and shit breeders ya get what ya paid for....hermies is why ya got eyes to see with..called pot bad luck...I can tell ya 95 percent by 4 weeks into veg with most strains and the other 5 percent within 3 weeks after that...and hermies can hold off till 8 /9 weeks before they show too...pay attention is the real advice here...good grow

Late veg as in when the plants ready to flower , sorry Ron but your wrong on this one  and I would've thought you as a dedicated horticulturist would've known this ?!

Time to get in the garden and study your plants me thinks ????

Enjoy

Thanks again, I saw pictures and heard people praise, love, or hate these "bonus seeds" and was curious. Still want to hear more stories of "bonus seed" plants. I'm talking about the one or a couple seeds from what would be a good bud, not those little sh#t hermi seeds that should be thrown away,

High Cisco,
I think you are wrong, mainly because cannabis can be kept in a vegetative state indefinitely, and this we know as a scientific fact. :)
A bit of cheeky sarcasm... ;) The plants are ready to flower whenever the grower decides, that's just the way it is. So when exactly from the moment that the grower mentally decides to flower the plants do the plants show sex? Read on my stoner friend... :)
Here's some dedicated horticulturist stuff for ya - for indoor growing or modified greenhouse/outdoor, cannabis won't go into flowering until it's stressed when light exposure is decreased to 16/8 or less, ruderalis notwithstanding. From my +9 years of research and growing 14 crops (speaks to limited practical experience), the average time until I first notice male sex is 8 days, the average time for females is 12 days (I've had to wait 3 weeks for one crop of plants to sex, wtf!?!), AFTER the lights were switched to 12/12, which means they were in flowering and not veg. Now then, how was that? ;) :)
I'm always open to learn more, even if it means having to relearn... :)
Bring some science... :)
Happy farming...

Lol..Funny, me too  !

In the great outdoors (keep yer MH and HPS in yr basement  !!), regular plants (not autos or fast flowering strains) seeds popped around 4/20, can be sexed pretty early.Mid July roughly, at 45 lat.I think that's called sexual maturity  :D ...

You gotta know what you're looking for though, don't search fr huge swollen crystally calyxes with inch long pistils  .
Take a close look at some internodes, near the fan leaves' base.
Hermaphrodism tendency is a genetical trait most Kush/OG/Diesel strains seem to have in common.Of course, some questionable "breeders" (more pollen chuckers if you ask) flood the market with untested crosses, surf on the hype, big $$ and savage marketing.Greed, greed greed.
