The bells, the bells!

This has been bothering me, off and on, for decades. There are two churches in Amsterdam that strike the hour on the half hour before the hour – Zuiderkerk and Westerkerk. At least, they do sometimes. At other times it occurs to me that I haven't heard it when I'm close enough to do so, but can't be absolutely sure that I just didn't notice.

It already sounds like crazy stoner, right? Which is why I've never been able to find out what's going on. I once asked in Paradox if anyone had noticed, close enough to Westerkerk for it to be heard, and got The Look. As far as I can see, I'm the only person who's noticed it, but that can't be true.

It isn't easy to google – I've looked at sites that go into the history of the churches, but found nothing. I suppose the thing to do would be to ask at the churches themselves, but I'm too afraid of being met with blank incomprehension, or possibly being given a long lecture on the history of bells.

I don't suppose anyone here has the answer, but I'm curious as to whether anyone else has heard the bells, or if I'm subject to the most boring audio hallucination ever.

stayed right next to the Noorderkerk for the last couple of weeks. Actually loved the bells at night. They would start..one, two, three, four....YEAH it's 4am got 4 or 5 more hours of sleep! Loved it. Have a habit of waking to just check the time - this was great, never had to open my eyes.

on another note - I have chimes as my phone sound. wtf - i could not tell my phone from the church bells! : )

And caught the tuesday carillon...was amazing walking around the Jordaan to Paradox. kept weaving in and out of streets to make the walk longer to hear them play.

Does anyone have any updates on the Zuiderkerk renovation? I recently saw a picture that had it covered in green scaffolding. I was also wondering about the tower being open for tours. I will be in town in April and the only information I can find says it should reopen in 2017.
