Meeting the ACD 420 stars via Eurostar

Post by talkrum »

This was my first proper 420, my first solo trip to Dam, my first ‘Toke n Talk’, my first holiday without the wife of 36 years and I got to meet a whole bunch of ACD superstars (& a few coffeeshop owners!) for the first time. I’m still buzzing now!

A perfect combination of reaching that ‘I don’t give a damn’ phase in life, enough Eurostar points for a free return ticket and the superb 2023 420 travelogues and live reporting by the gang - all of which reignited my 420 urges.
The forum, and particularly the travelogues, have helped to improve many a dull day for me. They transport you to Amsterdam, tell you what and where to eat, where to smoke and help you both enjoy and relive visiting this wonderful city and its people. This is my first 420 travelogue and I hope the first of many - dedicated to Kelly aka Luvtick – our ACD Travelogue Queen

Thursday 18th – One man’s tailbone is another man’s coccyx

My other half was fully aware of my desire to join the 420 gang – I may have occasionally (and repeatedly!) casually mentioned in passing – as one does. I was informing (boring) my wife about the fascinating numeric palindrome approaching- 4202024, when I heard the words – ‘why don’t you go to 420 on your own, my love’ – those words worked better than Viagra!
My mind went into overdrive. A spreadsheet was in order – no need to panic at this stage– a multi worksheet spreadsheet was required – coffeeshops to visit, strains, train times, money, what to wear, hotel etc etc – still, no need to panic – its only January! I got way too excited far too soon & ordered a ACD hoodie with leaf logo and 42024 in the ‘fire font’ – my first and only hoodie @ age 65 – about time or slightly weird?
I love trains, and when I realised that I had enough Eurostar points for a free return ticket I booked the 11.05 direct from St Pancras (4hrs15min). I am no stranger to Eurostar and much prefer trains to planes, but for me there is the added hurdle of getting to London in the same day. The other issue I have is sitting down for 7 hours. It’s a few years ago, and a very painful 18-hour coach journey to Spain, that I discovered I had a tailbone – a coccyx – and it does not like being sat on for hours. A special cushion helps, and I took one – it works – but you feel weird – like you are sat on a commode! – but it does improve the view.
Spreadsheets now on my iPhone!!!!!! Case and cushion packed– my 4-day 420 adventure starts @ 4.30am up, 5.15am out, 6am arrive in Manchester @ Piccadilly station - 6.31am to Euston on time. I ‘found’ a slice of my home-made Space Parkin in my bag (@ Bruce - a Lancashire ginger cake) I finished it before I boarded the train – coccyx now fully anesthetised - no need for the cushion this morning!
My train arrives 20 minutes late in London. St Pancras International is a 10 minute walk down Euston Road. I was hoping to get a breakfast before going through to departures but had to settle for a Marks & Sparks food hall buy and fly. Eurostar check in quick and easy but the lounge areas ‘air-side’ are totally inadequate. Standing room only until a train departs, then a couple of hundred seats are suddenly up for grabs – like a mad game of musical chairs. I find a strategically advantageous seat near one of the escalator ramps – the wrong ramp - as it turns out -15min before departure the doors to the ramps open on the opposite side of the hall! My carriage is right at the top of the ramp – result! I found my seat – but it was at a table – I try to avoid table seats because of cramped leg room. Somewhere in the on-line seat choosing option I cocked up. The three other people at the table are a family group – all wearing facemasks. I was embarrassed until I remembered my beloved had packed a new mask under my cushion. I could see the surprise in their eyes as I mounted my ‘throne-like’ cushion and donned my beautiful pristine mask – a regal moment indeed.
I managed to stagger to the buffet car for a brace of G&T’s, listen to load of music and watch a video or two downloaded on my phone. The 4 hours 15 minute ride only feels like 90 minutes – tops! I Love Eurostar - the train pulls in CS bang on time, one flight of steps, one last ticket barrier and I glide out of central station. Is there a better feeling?
I raced up the Damrak like a man possessed. My hotel is bang on Dam Square – not the cheapest but they have baths! I have back and neck pain issues & I always walk for miles and miles in Amsterdam – a good indica and a soak is all I crave. Lovely staff - as usual, nice room, I unpack and grab my re-usable Albert Hein carrier bag and I am out. Figure that I will get my supplies of munchable nibbles, milk etc from AH at the back of the Palace & then drop it off back at my hotel. All goes to plan, I finish my M&S butties & after unpacking, I grab my ‘new for 420 manbag’, unwrap it, and fill it with my mighty vape, a new 1.21-Gigawatt powerbank, rolling tray, grinder etc. It’s a heavy little bugger – made me think of the film death wish - 'swing your sock' ………. anyway……
I’m ‘out-out’ now! I step out on to the Damrak, head spinning - I consult the spreadsheet on my phone - destination number 1 – the Plug. I have memorised the route and arrive in under 60 seconds! (I don’t remember my feet touching the ground once!) I am greeted by a lovely smiley lady budtender – 1g cali CandyZ, & 1g Cheese please - (I do like a good cheese). Next I find a worm hole and hyperspace in seconds to Prix D’ami– in the last couple of years I have enjoyed their SSHaze and Canadian bud varieties– I only ever buy n fly – the monster security man on the door smiles and wafts me through – the crazy number of weed choices on the wall and way too eager folk behind me causes me a mild panic but I recover and go for 1g RZ24, & 1g blue cheese.
Voyagers and Central are regular haunts of mine. The bud is consistently inconsistent but the Chiesel from Voyagers @E14 has bucked the trend in recent visits. The Chiesel was gone, but I spied another ‘spreadsheet-to-try strain’ – 1g of Permanent Marker @E14.
Batavia next, grab half a Guiness and a seat in the back room and spend 30 minutes potting up my purchases into dosing capsules for my mighty. No sign of ACD gang. I tried the permanent marker. Not impressed with this weed. 2/10. Cheese from Plug next – better – more taste – 5/10. Guiness 8/10. Batcave staff 10/10.
Cali weed is relatively new to me, and I have a few new strains on my list to try – E30/g is stupid for weed imo, but I understand that it is crazy expensive in California even before it gets smuggled into the Netherlands. Before setting off again I try the CandyZ from the Plug – nice, sweet and gassy – 7/10 – but not particularly strong. The Red-Light district is packed as usual – I wiz through to my next stop, a buy n fly from Green Place, (THE place for Cali weed in Dam?) – budtender recommends Helium (cali) and I choose Oreoz from their rather limited range of non-cali options – 1g of each please. I love Newmarket and I can spend hours people watching – I often do. The mighty and pre-filled dosing capsules are great for discrete toking, whilst enjoying a nice Belgium beer at one of the many cafes. Tonight, there is live music from a marquee next to De Waag. I have one of those ‘only in Amsterdam ‘moments whilst sat enjoying a beer (& having a sneaky toke of blue cheese), when a large hen party appears from nowhere, the hen, grinning from ear to ear carrying a poorly inflated 3ft long penis. What do the Stags carry these days? (a puncture repair kit?)
Suddenly I have an ‘blue-cheese induced’ appetite, so I leg it down the Zeedijk to a favourite of mine, the Little Thai Prince. Too late, it was closing, so I walk round the corner and try the Burger Bar on the Warmoesstraat. I am not a burger eater; it was better than a big mac - if that’s good? My back and knees are complaining. When I checked my phone some of the ACD gang were in Siberie, I didn’t fancy any more walking, so I decided to call it a night and go back and have a bath and pot up my remaining purchases in preparation for a big day tomorrow. Had a quick look at some pics of the ACD gang – will I recognise them? I remember that Azlaker has the most amazing rock star hair (think Jimmy Hendrix x David Coverdale) – no problem then - Look for the hair. Early ACD trip to Keukenhof gardens a definite no-no – I intend a leisurely morning brekkie (& bath) before I meet the gang @ Kadinsky 2 which is only 50m from my hotel. What a day – I’m absolutely knackered, but I am in Amsterdam!!

Really great read that!

Spreadsheets lol I too am prone to obsessiveness in the lead up to a trip. All part of the fun isn't it

Never been on Eurostar. Interesting. I very much like the idea of arriving at CS

I also have a Mighty, great idea to keep the dosing caps in their respective bags , I'm having that :D

Looking forward to more

Friday 19th - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
I had very good night’s sleep. Breakfast was comprised of various AH muchies, 2 coffees and wake n bake of Helium & Oreoz from Green Place. The Helium was strong. 8/10, Oreoz disappointing 5/10. Yesterday, I managed to purchase a couple of bath bombs from the Lush shop @ Spui. The cannabis leaf-shaped bomb was irresistible – it matched the logo on my new ACD hoodie!. Only a stoner could stink out a Hotel bedroom with a bath bomb that smells of pot!
I have always wanted to attend a Toke n Talk, I tried in 2019 – I said hello to Lem & Trad outside the Bottle, went into a very smoky De Kuil, coughed – and left immediately. I was suffering with Montezuma's Revenge (aka the Aztec two-step) and spent 4 days within 100m of my hotel!
This time – no excuses, I had plenty of time before meeting up with the ACD crew, so I had no need to rush. Meet at Kadinsky 2 @ 1pm – no problem – next cross passage down the Damrak from my hotel. I put on my new ACD hoodie, grab my new 420 man bag (brick) and stride out.
I arrive before 1pm – but there is no-one in the coffeeshop, Opposite the Coffeeshop they have a bar – I went in and asked a member of staff if this is Kadinsky number 2? She said they have 3 shops. I looked at my ACD Map, it was ancient. The 3 Kadinsky shops are NOT numbered on my map! I panic and decide I must be at the wrong shop. I embark on a serious session of powerwalking and rush down the Rokin, first the shop near the Nes, and then across to the 3rd shop. No ACD gang to be seen. I race back to the first shop and when I arrive, Lem and Igraine are sat inside. Phew!
I get my breath back and then remember that I need a Tram ticket. I explain this to Lem and rush off. I head off down the Damrak to the GVB office in front of Central Station. The Damrak has doubled in length overnight! - how far away is the ticket office? – after 10 minutes of speed walking all the way down I grab my 3 day ticket and then spend 20 minutes ‘limping’ back. Strange things happen to time and distances in Amsterdam – could it be caused by mind-altering substances? Kadinsky 2 is only 50m from my hotel – give or take 5 miles!
My knees are on fire as I stagger in, most of the gang have arrived. I spot Azlaker (the not so Hairy one) and immediately I thank him for his many contributions to the forum. We congregate in the Kadinsky bar for a beer and a vape session – but we are told no vaping allowed -wtf?. We have a drink, and the IPA is surprisingly good, and one by one I get to meet the gang. I talk Uk medical weed and vapes briefly with Bedge and say hello to our Canadian members Trad and Sammysarahh. Everyone has a tale to tell, and I am hooked already. What a bunch of folks – all beautifully different, generous and slightly wacky – my kind of people.
We are ‘herded’ to the tram and set off for the Stud. In recent years, this has been one of my favourite shops. (probably because of all the positive reports on the forum) The weed is better quality & value than many of the shops in the Centrum imo, and I normally combine a buy n fly visit with a trip to the Poesiat & Kater Proeflokaal (micro-brewery) which is just across the road.
We are ushered into a room at the back of the shop – perfect. Lemming and Igraine man the Volcano whilst our host, Mjhowy showers us with weed, hash, drinks and strawberries – for over 2 hours!! The vape bags keep circling the room & I enjoy a toot on most of the bags as they pass by. I was sat with another ACD newbie, Professoref – a local lady and big fan of the Stud. We talked for ages, and the Prof kept me thoroughly entertained – I loved our chat – thank you.
This was the first of many fabulous conversations I had with ACD gang members over 420.
I have never experienced anything similar in a coffeeshop before. At the end of the session, we were all given a packed goody bag including an Stud Coffeeshop embroidered polo shirt!
Wow, it was a privilege to be invited. I had an unforgettable extraordinary afternoon. Massive thank you to Mjhowy and all the Staff @ The Stud. On the way out I purchase bags of SSH and Wedding Cake (as recommended by the Prof), I thank the hosts and head for the Tram. Ghost had organised for the gang to go for Tapas and Cocktails @ the Rum Barrel - I decided to give it a miss as I have a food allergy - sesame oil – and I must be cautious.
I jump off @ the Rokin & buy a footlong Subway sandwich and take it back to the hotel. I think I must have crashed as I can’t remember much more – way too stoned – this is what happens when a lightweight toker hangs with the ACD Pro’s. I need more practise, 420 here I come!

really enjoyed that, talkrum - you have a very propulsive style of writing, and the amount of detail in the first chapter in particular conveyed the buzz of that long awaited trip finally arriving!

I was initially sniggering at your multi-worksheet excel-based approach but this soon turned to envy when I realised how organised and effective it was, with the routes all mapped out, the spreadsheet on your phone and the pre-dose caps set up for the mighty .... I look forward to trying to incorporate some of your method within my own.

Saturday 4/20/2024 - in 420 at 4.20

Spreadsheet says - 27 visits since 1996 – 160 days total and counting - I am a Amst-a-holic. I love Amsterdam and all things Dutch. I love the coffeeshop culture, the brown cafes, the proeflokaals, the canals, the festivals, King’s and Queen’s days, MC Escher, Haarlem, Zandvoort and the seemingly never-ending joy @ finding another excuse to visit!
420 on 420 has always been on my must do list, thanks in part to our pioneering and fearless American ACD members. Lugging their VHS cameras around the coffeeshops, then posting videos on YouTube showing the crew in full 420 ‘Smoke-out’ mode – just brilliant – the joy, the smoke! - Blueberryams - I love you!
I have many fond memories of me and the Mrs sitting in 420 Café – back in the day it was a beautiful Dutch pub which also sold weed and it became my go to shop every visit. Frank Zappa on the walls and in our ears, a glass of froth and a gram or two of N.Y Diesel and Blueberry and, apart from the weird close ups of monster-like insects on all the TV’s, this was how I believed all coffeeshops should be. No fuss, nice staff and a bloody powerful microscope on the bar – which I noticed nobody ever used. Got me thinking, would you want to find one of those ‘tv insects’ on your bud! (clever budtender tactics or what?) Btw does anyone remember the grasshopper on the ceiling in the Grasshopper Pub? A fat one of Nevilles Haze from Hunters. together with a very large realistic insect (upside down on the ceiling!) is not my idea of fun and relaxation. I saw it wink – honest!
When the Dutch authorities told coffeeshops to choose between booze and buds they ruined De Kuil imo and my other favourite haunt, T’Nes. De Kuil feels a bit empty to me now and quite hostile to non-smokers (too many visitors still secretly mix with tobacco) and more importantly, the weed can be more miss than hit. The only way I could participate in 420 would be on a solo trip – and today’s the day. After yesterday’s amazing session at the Stud, I have a much better idea of what’s in store for me - I am a lightweight mixing with professionals, and I decide against the early sesh @ Siberie. ‘cos “A good man always knows his limitations”
Following another long soak in the bath. a cheeky capsule or 2 of Wedding Cake (from the Plug - 7/10) & finishing the other half of a Subway buttie – I consult the spreadsheet. - it says that my next purchases should be BClean strains from Solo @ Newmarket and next Cali strains from Terps Army - which I have never visited & it’s only 100 yds from De Kuil!
As I step out of my hotel about 10am. I notice a crowd of folk who are listening to a pianist on the square. He can play. I love this. I love finding live music in Amsterdam, from the carillon bells on the Oude Kerk, to the 10-day long Gractenfestival in August - featuring live music all over the city. I always find live music when I’m here, it’s everywhere. I listened for a while then nip through the crowd and drop him a few coins in the box – what a good start to 420.

The Amsterdam weather can be fickle, it nearly always is, but this morning the sun is shining as I go over to Solo. I had read good things about ‘BClean’ strains – they have 2 choices and I grab both @ E20/g -Emergen C (indica) & Killah Clenz (sativa) – the hole in the wall style payment machine seems completely OTT to me - for such a little shop, but the Budtender is pleasant, and I am in and out in a flash.
cssolo.JPG
cssolo.JPG (1.45 MiB) Viewed 510 times
I have rented a tiny canal house on Korte Koningsstraat a couple of times. I will always remember sitting on the roof terrace listening and watching a blackbird in full voice. All the Dutch birds like showing off in Amsterdam - I think I would sing from the rooftops, if I lived here.
A text message to my wife says I ate a BLT, and it was poor, that bad - that as a write this, I cannot remember buying or eating it! The message also says I got wet – very wet. Amsterdam can hit you with the most vicious downpours – stair rods – in my language. I have learned over the years to expect the unexpected in Dam. I was prepared – but I still got wet.
Next stop Terps Army, spreadsheet says cheaper Cali weed than Green Place, so I grab the Sherbanger and Biscotti @ E25/g each. I amble back to the Hotel, via AH for more nibbles and stuff. I sample, then pot up my new purchases and set off for the Bottle. The Bottle I know is or was next to De Kuil but when I get there it is now called De Kroon. Is there another Bottle bar, am I in the wrong place? - I see Trad and a couple of familiar faces – panic over.
We make our way next door into De Kuil (420 Cafe). The ACD gang is here, and we all manage to squeeze in and around the front window and a table near the bar. We talk and shout, some smoke, some vape, and it gets louder and smokier by the minute. I vape a big hole in the pre-potted Cali stash and my autopilot kicked in at some point. I am looking forward to more reports because I cannot remember what happened between 4.20 and the boat trip. I have vague memories of being dragged backwards out of a gent’s toilet by Sam, cos she “didn’t like the look of the ladies loo!” I was too stunned to argue - is this a Canadian thing?
I was lucky to get on the boat, as I had not pre-booked, but AzLaker pulled a few strings with the Lady Captain, and they let me on. It was cold, so they shut all the plastic window sheets and it got warmer – but it filled up with smoke.

We enjoyed a couple of drinks & some of the guys tried to have a puff on hookah chillum or hubbly bubbly contraption. It is always nice to get a canalboat view of amsterdam, especially at night, especially when stoned. It was a nice ride, and we went through the slightly psychedelic Red-Light district and down past the Batcave and at some point, out onto the Amstel.
redlight.jpg
redlight.jpg (431.97 KiB) Viewed 510 times
I remember getting the thumbs up from the boat crew when I pointed at the canal wall and pronounce “this is the dam on the Amstel – the Amsteldam = Amsterdam! Fine stoner knowledge imo – and a clear performance indicator – I am proper stoned now.
We got back to where we boarded and another group of 15 punters are waiting for their trip. Text message later that evening to my Mrs reads “3rd trip of the evening x 15 passengers x E30pp = nice little earner, lets buy a boat!”
I was hungry, and Ghost suggested a steakhouse nearby – San Thomas. Azlaker and Sam come along. The food was fine, and we all enjoyed it. The staff freaked out when Az and Sam suddenly rushed out of the restaurant - to buy space cakes! We explained to the manager that they were foreigners, in a strange land etc etc - and we apologised profusely. After what seemed like an age they returned, and they brought pieces of cake back for me & Ghost – result! I cannot recall anymore of 420 - AzLaker reports that we finished the night at Batavia. Was I there too?

Interesting you mention Blueberry. I exchanged messages with her via Facebook (where she's Berry Blue) last year. I wonder whether she still reads these forums occasionally?

Sunday 21st April - Here, there and everywhere

I am woken up by a very loud demo in Dam Square - must have left the window open. - I consult the ACD Forum - Lem says:-
12:30 (12.30pm) Green Place meet for metro to ...
14:00 (2pm) Het Ballonnetje proposed by Lemming
18:00 (6pm) Spirit for pinball competition proposed by Ghost

I step out onto the Damrak and when I looked for the noisy protestors, I was gobsmacked – only a handful of people with one microphone and a massive PA system in a car!
I saunter over to Newmarket, whatsapp message from Lem mentions food @ café Poco Loco. I ordered a club sandwich – and I enjoyed it. (it was probably the best food I ate on this trip).
We finish our brunch and after few steps up the street, we settle in Green Place, where the gang are waiting. As we leave, I notice someone has left a brand new expensive Venty vape on the table and I grab it! – it belongs to Ghost - you owe me one m8!

The Gang have kindly been invited to a sesh @ Het Ballonnetje (The Baloon) again this year. After the welcome we received @ The Stud, and reading previous travelogues, I am looking forward to this, my first visit. We cross Newmarket and head down on to the Metro - destination Weesperplein Station, only a couple of stops away. As we enter the station we walk past a small choir, in fine voice, singing the Beatles song – “here, there and everywhere” – a good title for today’s travels.

The Balloon - what a nice-looking shop and so easy to find from the metro stop. I had a quick look at their menu – nice selection of Cali plus all the usual suspects @ very reasonable prices. We are ushered to an upper mezzanine floor - overlooking the shop below. Our host, Florian, showers each table with baggies of weed and hash, sandwiches and drinks!

My new ACD friend, from the Stud sesh - Professoref joins us again together with ACD Members Nuggs and Jorge (another Venty user). We talk vapes – Mighty versus Venty pros and cons and we are served more drinks, food, rosin extracts, hash and more baggies. Florian sat with us and explained how he got into the business. He gave us a fabulous insight on how Coffeeshops work and manage to operate within the strict Dutch rules. It’s a slick and sophisticated automated system – it must be all of the time – as any mistake and the licence can be revoked. I follow a young Youtuber\Kick influencer – Drew Gilchrist - who has featured The Baloon on youtube twice. I can now see why this shop is becoming a must visit – just like the Stud. I will return.

As we are leaving, I remember asking Lem “why do the shops roll-out the red carpet for the ACD crew?” - His careful (guru style) reply “no idea……….long may it continue,”
We all jumped on a tram to CS Spirit – a shop I have visited before – following ACD Worldcitizen’s recommendation. The shop has a nice selection of retro games machines, pinball etc. Nice to visit if you are with non-tokers. We settle down on a long table near the pinball machines. I have Docgonzo on my left, Gapie was sat quietly on my right (with broken bones!) and Jollyliitlehun sat opposite.
I got to hear a little of Docgonzo’s journey in life, his loves, his music, his fascination with celebrity graves – the Lot. Wow – you got me hooked pal & I do hope we get the chance to do it again. Ditto @ Jollylittlehun– I enjoyed our conversations thoroughly. I was far too busy puffing & parroting, and oblivious to the pinball competition going on, when Ghost tells me I am the last competitor. I have a go – no idea what I was doing - but the force was with me. I text the wife – not sure who is winning, but I got 11.7 million! Unbelievably I won the coveted ACD Tigger.

We are all starving - I suggest a favourite of mine, Little Thai Prince on the Zeedijk. We race across and arrive at 21.10 – to be told they are closing! I am rapidly falling out of love with LTP – as this is my second failed attempt in 3 days! We pile in to an Italian restaurant further up the street. We have soggy Pizza and Peroni lager– it resembles food, so we eat up, sup up, pay up and leave. Batavia next to finish the night until they chuck us out. I say my goodbyes and race back to my hotel to watch match of the day! I start packing and have a go at finishing my stash and then before I crash, I update my Spreadsheet. It now says: 4 days, 16 grams purchased costing E270 (average E17/g) - 6g Cali weed the rest Dutch – I have no idea how much free stuff I vaped in total – DocGonzo’s & Azlaker’s travelogues have already listed all the strains we sampled – and I tried most of them.

Monday 22nd April – ACD 420 - Done it, got the Polo Shirt, The Hoodie and Tigger to prove it.
I eat the AZ & Sam space cake as I sat waiting for the 14.45 Eurostar direct to London.

Manchester train was on time and my beloved picked me up at 22.35 from my local tram stop, after another long day.
I am so chuffed to have met the latest gang of active ACD Superstars. What a thoroughly decent, generous and welcoming bunch of folks you are – thank you all for your friendship and company.

Let’s do it all again in 2025!
