Amsterdam & Haarlem 2025 (with photos)

Post by avfc-herbalist »

Hello everyone  8)

Back from the Dam and the blues are hitting hard so hopefully this report will mentally take me back as I type

Pre Trip
In the 7 days before leaving there were mixed emotions for the wife and I… Our 22 month old daughter had a raging temperature of 39.2c (102.5f) and a terrible cough. Could not stop thinking about whether we were going to catch it and if we felt ok or not. Major paranoia of getting poorly! Spoiler alert… We were ok  and the little one recovered before we went, thank goodness.

And on the other side of my paranoia was elation… I had a doctors appointment with a Medical Cannabis Clinic and the doctor prescribed me    10g of Black Triangle, 10g of Dela Haze, 10g of Kush Cookies and a Pineapple Express 800mg THC vape!! Surreal experience for an Englishman. 30g a month, every month. Liberating!! (If any UK folk want to get in touch, PM me, I’ll be happy to share my experience.)

Day 1

KLM Flight delayed by 20 minutes from Birmingham Airport, little frustrating but it could be way worse. Board plane and pilot tells us he’ll make up for the delay in the air. 40 minutes later and we’re descending into Schipol. Now the dreaded post Brexit passport control. All I’ll say on Brexit is Viva La Europe. In the All Other Passports queue we get through and with our passports stamped it’s on to the train station to make our way to Centraal.

This trip we were organised and had downloaded the NS app and had our E-Tickets at the ready. No waiting at the ticket booth. Down the escalator and there’s a Sprinter train sat at the platform. Amsterdam Lelylaan annd Amsterdam Sloterdijk come and go. Centraal is next and we’re buzzing! Smelt the first bit of weed walking through Centraal Station and that really made me realise we are back! My favourite city!

Prix D’Ami is the first stop of the day.

Dreambro’s Purple Sour Dreams €15/g. Lovely sour smell, reminded me of an ECSD but not full on like the Evergrey smell from Grey Area (circa 2012-2015) but nice enough to give me a bit of nostalgia. Smell transferred to taste nicely but it did burn with a dark ash.

Prix D’Ami is rammed. Queuing on the stairs whilst the staff radio through to other staff manning the rooms to see if there’s space. We get a space to sit and smoke. Waiter comes to take our order. One fresh orange juice and a blue Fernandez (grape). Waiter has no idea what a blue Fernandez is, I show him a picture on google and he goes oh that’s very Dutch. We don’t stock those, did we used to? We say yeah and it’s a shame they’re no longer on the menu. The waiter looks at a man sat opposite us who’s wearing a Stone Island jumper and jacket in deep conversation with someone and says you could ask him why they’re not on the menu anymore, that’s Prix D’Ami’s owner. We never did ask him but we did observe him lol. He was smoking one of those new style joints, and according to the doob tube it had 2g of Mango Haze and 0.5g of Rosin. With a glass roach/filter/tip.

He was constantly asking the staff to tell people to put their tobacco away and remove discarded cigarette filters from ashtrays. Very glad I’m a pure smoker as I could've had a telling off from the owner haha! His companion asked him something and all I understood was Coffeeshops and roken (smoking). If only I understood Dutch.

Smoked our joint and thanked the owner for letting us share his table. He said no problem, we all have to share sometimes! Seems like a nice man.

Left Prix D’Ami to go drop our bags off at the hotel. City View Hotel just off of Haarlemmerstraat. Winner here as not only can we drop our bags off but we can check in too! 3rd floor up those traditional Dutch stairs. Room isn’t the biggest but it’s got an en suite and satellite tv. BBC1, BBC2 & Comedy Central. That’ll do for some stoned bedtime watching.

Back out onto the Haarlemmerstraat and notice Coffeeshop Amsterdam still has a Dampkring sign above its door. Has it always been here since the change of name? Can't ever remember noticing it before.

Walking towards Cookies (Greenhouse Lounge), the wife notices a nice bakery called Bake My Day with pistachio croissants in the window. She fancies one so in we go.

After munching we make our way into Cookies and straight to the bud counter. Budtender says we have to try the Gelato as it's really nice and shows us, it smelt lovely. 1g of that at €13. Nice price. We sat down and skinned up, just as I sparked up, KC & The Sunshine Band - Baby Give It Up started playing on the speakers. I think everyone in the Coffeeshop was bobbing their heads along. Peach ice tea, spliff and a head bob. Love it.

After Cookies, we decide to check out Coffeeshop 137, a first for the both of us but unfortunately it's packed out. We take a little walk, snapping a couple photo's as we go.

That blue sky and slight bit of sun lasted roughly 8 minutes

We walk aimlessly and end up at Dam Square and see a couple Rik Shaw bikes, we look at each other, we both know where we're going. Club Media! Our favourite Coffeeshop in De Pijp. We ask to go to Club Media but he doesn't know where that is, he asks his mate on the other Rik Shaw but he doesn't know either. I just say Katsu and he instantly knows where I'm talking about now, happy days.

Rik Shaw pulls up outside Burger Bar and we disembark. Turn the corner and pass through the Albert Cuyp Markt, we will walk through the market after a joint and drink in Media as I would like to purchase a new wallet. Walking down the road to Media a group of 6 people enter before us. Dread runs through me as I hate travelling down to De Pijp to not get a seat in a Coffeeshop. As we walk past the window, dread leaves me as there is only a table for 2 available. The group get served a few pre rolls and are denied entry to smoke as there is no room for them.

I scan the menu, and see a classic! Champagne Haze! Love this smoke, wasn’t on the menu on my last trip but it’s normally a constant resident of the Club Media menu. Not as good as I remember it but still very nice. Takes me back to when Utopia (RIP) used to have it on their menu all the time. We grab Champagne Haze €13.50/g and Peanut Butter €10.95/g and get buzzed into the Coffeeshop.

Couple of cold chocomels and a joint of Champagne Haze and all is well with the world. Look at my phone for the time and see it’s 4:30, I say to the wife we better leave and get to the market as they’ll more than likely be packing away soon.

We hit the Markt and I see a stall selling wallets and purses and the like. We approach, man behind the stall tells us these wallets are real buffalo leather inside and out. One of them had a nice running stitch that I liked the look of. Turn to the wife for her opinion and she bursts out laughing, uncontrollable giggles have taken over her, as I stand confused looking at her I realise we need to get out of here before this man takes offence. As we get away from the stall and her giggles calm down, I ask what was that all about. She replies when the man said buffalo leather and she saw the stitching her mind instantly went to cowboys and John Wayne lol. Champagne Haze definitely did the trick for the wife haha

Walking through the market I saw Greg Monsieur and remembered that Smokeybee21 recommended it. I ordered the Hamster which is ham and plenty of cheese. Very nice toastie. Thanks for the recommendation Smokeybee21!

The heavens then opened up on us. Pissing down with rain we decide to leave the market and De Pijp and take the walk back up to the centrum. Wish I knew how to work out the metro but hey ho maybe next trip or maybe day 3 (more on that later lol). We turn left out of Albert Cuypstraat onto Van Woustraat and up onto Frederiksplein to finally walk up Utrechtsestraat. We get to Rembrandtplein and walk past Coffeeshop Smokey. There’s an ice skating rink pretty much opposite Smokey with families having great fun.

I realise we are by Easy Times 2 so ask the wife if she’d like a hot chocolate and joint to get out of the rain. We walk past and it looks rammed. It looked that busy there was no point even going in. We carry on walking when disaster strikes as instead of turning right onto Koningsplein we turn left and onto Leidsestraat and eventually to the Leidseplein and when I notice The Bulldog Palace I say “WHAT THE FUCK, NO NO NO NO, I CAN’T BELIEVE IT, HOW THE FUCK HAVE WE MANAGED THAT” now remember it is pissing with rain and we are drenched. The wife is blaming me because I wanted a detour to Easy Times 2. We should’ve just kept going she says lol.

Luckily and I mean very very luckily there’s a Rik Shaw parked up and I run to it. He says €25 to Haarlemmerstraat, I know I’m being ripped off but I can’t be bothered to barter and just accept it. Finally back to the hotel. Out of our sopping wet clothes, the wife takes a nap and I stand under a hot shower for 40 minutes.

Feeling refreshed we head back out. The wife fancies Wok to Walk so we head to the branch on Kolksteeg.

Standing outside Wok to Walk I can’t help but think of Coffeeshop Ben that used to be next door. It’s been closed over 10 years now. Wasn’t a great Coffeeshop to be honest but will always stick in my mind.

Wok to Walks ate, we head to the Wonder Bar to blaze some of our stash. We notice people in the window seat are putting on coats so we wait and when free we climb in. Drinks are expensive in here, they must make an absolute fortune. €5 for a can of coke, €5 for a glass of chocomel that you watch the bloke pour out of a €3 carton hahaha. With smoker friendly bars being hard to come by these days, Wonder Lounge, Wonder Bar and Lost in Amsterdam were always rammed.

IMG_0313.jpeg

Hopefully the Mayor/City Council won’t end up attacking the smoker friendly bars on the Nieuwendijk like they have on Warmeosstraat. The Coffeeshops that were here are already long gone, the likes of Hollywood, The Freeworld, Blues Brothers, La Canna and probably a few more. So fingers crossed the smoke friendly bars on Nieuwendijk stay exactly as they are. We sat and watched highlights of Atalanta vs Inter Milan.

In tv watching mode I suggest we head to Prix D’Ami to see if we can catch a film in the cinema room.

No room, yet again. Oh well, we go down to the bud counter on the way out and I see Chocolatina on the menu. I remember watching a Hazeface YouTube video where he samples Chocolatina. Smells real nice. Grab a gram of that at €12.50/g and head out.

Coffeeshop Bagheera is next on the list as I was after some Gummy Bears and was also was hoping to sit out on their terrace. The terrace was closed, and so was Basjoe’s terrace. Look at the menu, no Gummy Bears. Ask to look at the Zheetos, smelt nice so we went for it. €12 per gram. Sat right at the back of the Coffeeshop. Nice quiet chilled Coffeeshop is Bagheera.

Leave Bagheera and head towards Chipsy King off Dam Square. Kebab and chips with garlic mayo please mate. That hit the spot nicely. Walking back towards the hotel, we think about seeing if there’s space in 137 as it’s only a few minutes walk past the hotel. We get there and there is room. Happy days!

Coffeeshop 137
Thanks to Ghost’s live report I really wanted to come here. Checked over the menu and went for the Kosher Kush which was €16/g. Real nice smoke, heavy hitter indeed. Funky payment system here, notes and coins go into machines on the front of the counter. Got a seat at the back on the high stools next to a slightly open window. Cold draught coming through the window was very pleasant. The Coffeeshop is on a nice busy-ish corner. Great for people watching. A lot of dog walkers which I found strange at like 11:30pm on a Friday night.
They had signs on the wall and windows that said New Opening Hours 9:00am - 00:55am.

Blazed from the Kosher we walk back to the hotel and crash as we’re up early tomorrow to go to Haarlem.

Day two coming soon.

Loved this thread!

So pleased you checked out 137 too... I'm familiar with the exact seat you are talking about, top-right of the shop in the raised area, with the small top window... I also enjoyed the breeze here, and also enjoyed the Kosher, possibly one of the best smokes of my trip... the permanent marker from here is also lovely! (But usually sold out quickly)

Hopefully you didn't fall into all of those stacked up Wizard Tree boxes at the back of the shop! haha. :D

Thank you very much choc0block, I’m not ashamed to admit that it bought a little tear to my eye. It’s something I’ve dreamt of for years and years.

That is exactly the seat I am talking about. Glad to see it’s a popular choice  I do wish that I sampled more of their menu. Only had the Kosher and Rainbow Beltz.

It’s funny you say that because even though I didn’t include it in the travelogue, I did write in my notes that “this Coffeeshop is decorated with lots and lots of cali packs and cali boxes”  luckily I didn’t trip over them  thanks for the reply Old Time Stoner 8)

Thanks AzLaker, we hadn’t been in town together since 2019 so tried to do all of our favourite things and do new stuff too. Was quite the work out .

Thanks Lem. I do need to apologise to you for not getting a picture of Aktama 2, it just wasn’t the weather for a bike rental. Sorry mate.

Hahaha, I hope the report went well with your after work spliff HitTheNorth. Honestly, it was the worst weather I’ve ever had in Amsterdam in 12 trips. Thank you for the kind words mate. Haarlem was great, it’s a wicked place. I’m looking forward to writing about it 8)

It was a wicked trip mate. 137 is a brilliant little Coffeeshop, seems like it’s becoming a forum favourite which is great news. Hopefully the only thing that has changed with 137 is the name. I do wonder how they import all those Wizard Tree boxes  not exactly easy to hide

Sorry it's taken so long to get day 2 out everyone

Day 2

Alarm goes off at half 7 as we want to catch the 9:06 train to Haarlem. One look over at the wife let's me know that the train at 9:06 will be departing without us  I go back to sleep and wake up at 8:15, take a shower and change. Tell the wife it's maybe time to get up if she wants

I take a stroll to Albert Heijn on Nieuwendijk for some apple juice and get stuck trying to get out. I'm trying my hardest to push the turnstile open but it isn't having it. One of the staff says to scan my receipt to get it to open and deja vu hits, I'm sure this has happened before but I seem to forget every time . With my Albert Heijn hostage situation over I make my way back to the hotel.

With the wife ready we take a walk to Centraal Station. There's a train at 10:10 to Haarlem Spaarnwoude, I ask the conductor/controller if this goes to Haarlem Centraal and he says yes. We get on, Wife isn't happy. She says this is the wrong train, I say I asked the bloke and he said it does. Bit of back and forthing and I submit to my wife and get off. The train conductor/controller is just looking at me now   I kinda shrug at him as if to say happy wife happy life   he blows his whistle, boards the train and away it goes. Does anyone know if that train would've ended up at Haarlem Centraal?
The 10:20 Intercity isn't a long wait and at least the board reads Haarlem Centraal .

The reason for this Haarlem excursion is that I read Jolly Little Hun's report saying how he sourced a copy of Nol Van Schaik's book The Dutch Experience: 30 years of Hash and Grass Coffeeshops and after a couple of PM's with JLH, I knew I'd be able to get a copy. Thanks again for the info JLH!

Train gets to Haarlem at about 10:35, straight round the back of the station and take a walk up to Koffieshop Birdy.

Greeted by a very nice and welcoming lady. Look at the menu and ask for Lemon Haze €10/0.9g and the Jelly Hash €10/0.5g. The lady said if you buy one more €10 bag you'll get €5 off. So basically spend €30 but only pay €25. Brilliant deal. Went for the Alien Kush €10/g. Weed and Hash is pre bagged.

Ask to get buzzed in to the Coffeeshop proper for a smoke. Order a latte and grape fernandes (wife was very happy) and are handed skinning up trays and proceed to a table.
Image

Drinks arrive just as I'm about to spark up the lemon and notice my latte comes with a biscoff biscuit! Result! The music was on point in Birdy this morning. Eek-A-Mouse - Ganja Smuggling & Junior Murvin - Police & Thieves to name a couple of the reggae classics coming out of the speakers.
Image

With the nice lemony sativa smoke filling the air around us the conversation turns into what most Coffeeshop patrons have probably discussed. What our own Coffeeshop would be like. We both agreed that Birdy is truly a good template for a Coffeeshop. Nice and big but with a cosy living room feel. Locals sat at the bar/counter chatting away. Saw one man come in with his own pool cue in it's case and that truly gave me nostalgia as it reminded me of the factory social club I used to go in with my dad when I was a child & he'd take his own pool cue with him. Unfortunately my dad would be drinking lager and smoking fags instead of smoking sensi

It got me thinking of The UK and how there's a tiny bit of movement in the "Legal Coffeeshop" scene for medicinal patients. They are Coffeeshops but are called Medicinal Cannabis Consumption Lounges. You take your prescription with you and medicate with other patients. There's one in the next town over from me. They've been raided but still continue to operate as they're doing nothing illegal. 8) anyway I digress.

The lemon was a real nice first smoke of the day. Citrus smell transferred nicely to the taste. Finish the smoke and debate whether or not to have another in Birdy as we're enjoying the atmosphere. We do decide to leave though as we've got tickets for the Buddha Lounge Smoke Boat at 4pm back in Amsterdam.

We say our thank yous and goodbyes and as I'm closing the door behind me, I notice 3 plaques on the outside wall. One plaque I recognise is the THC logo (Team Haarlemse Coffeeshopondernemers) which I think is the Union of Coffeeshop Owners in Haarlem? Which I also think Nol Van Schaik set up? Please anyone correct me if I am wrong. The second plaque states all of the house rules and is accompanied with the THC logo from the sign above. Brilliant to have house rules outside on a metal plaque. Amsterdam could really do with something similar. The final plaque says Keurmerk Coffeeshop which I had no idea about. The English translation is Quality Mark Coffeeshop. After some online research, I discovered that they're trying to get Coffeeshops an ISO type of certification. Helping them use actual banks etc. Looks like it's ran by the BCD (Bond van Cannabis Detaillisten). https://coffeeshopkeurmerk.com/

Walking back towards the centrum we walk past a lovely flower stall and there's what looks like a nice canal walk with the canal path next to a grass verge. Would be a lovely walk in the spring sunshine.

We walk back past the train station and past Cannabis Shop Willie Wortel's Sativa

It looked very busy so we carried on walking to Willie Wortel's Indica. This is where Haarlem really shone (not literally, was raining again ) the streets were peaceful and clean, so peaceful and clean!
Image
Image
Image

Walking towards Indica we came out of a little side street opposite Windmill De Adriaan which was built in 1779!
Image
Image

Love the fact that Coffeeshops in Haarlem can call themselves a Cannabis Shop. For somewhere only 15 minutes away by train from Amsterdam, the Coffeeshop scene seems to have such a different attitude.

Cannabis Shop Willie Wortel's Indica
Image

We get inside of Indica and are greeted by a young budtender and take a look at the menu, the lemon from Birdy has got us in a fruity mindset so we opt for the Lemon Cherry Gelato €12.50/g. Smells great.
Image

We get buzzed in to the Coffeeshop proper. I go to the counter and ask the budtender for 2 cans of coke, he's chilling with his mates who are sat and the bar/counter. As he brings me the cokes, I ask do you have any copies of Nol's book for sale, he says bare with me, I'll go have a check. He comes back and says they do have copies for sale but he's sorry he doesn't know the price so can't sell it until he gets confirmation. I say no problem, I'll have a smoke and come back up. 3/4 through the joint a couple walk in with a dog. Budtender chats to them and gives me the look to say "sorted" so I go back to the counter and get a copy of Nol's book for €20. Feeling very happy and content, I roll another spliff and look out of the window at the windmill. An old boy pulls up in his car, goes to the bud counter and as he remerges he's stuffing what looks like a fat 5g bag into the top pocket of his shirt 8) what a bloke.

The chap from the couple who the young budtender was chatting to about the book came over and thanked me for purchasing Nol's book and gave me a porcelain clog ashtray as a gift

I wish I had asked him his name but I was stoned and if I'm honest I'm not a great chatter to new people when I'm baked. I recognise his face though as I've seen him on a few photo's. He had an INDICA baseball cap on. I got out my copy of Dutch Hash Coffeeshop Tour book from 1995 and show him the advertisement that Willie Wortel's Workshop had in there. He said The Workshop! Wow, long gone now. We also had Dutch Joint and shown me the old sign that's hanging on the wall. I said you've also got Willie Wortel's Sinsemella haven't you and he replied yeah, we do, but that's more for the youth. Felt old when he said that    I'm only 32. I suppose when I was 18 I thought 32 was old so there you are

Great Coffeeshop is Indica. Great people, great weed and a great view! Young budtender was playing UK grime/rap/drill on the sound system. Not my cup of tea but I've been lucky with Coffeeshop music so far

Finishing off the spliff, we see a family of 4 walking towards the shop. Mum, Dad and two little boys. Dad and two boys keep on going and Mum pops into the Coffeeshop, picks up and walks back out to catch up with her family. I fucking love Holland. No drama, no taboo, no social services  just two stoner parents getting on in life with their family!

We say thank you at least 10 times on our way out.

We're heading to the Grote Markt.

Sorry for the blurry photo's, I was battling against the rain.

A quick walk through the Markt and we come across a cannoli stand, they're €10 for 5. They were very nice. Kind man on the stall gave us 6 for €10 so we didn't argue over who was going to have the last one

Rain gets a bit heavier now so I say let's seek refuge in Coffeeshop Empire! Turn right out of the market and then next left and it's there. A few doors down from Subway.

Was really looking forward to coming here as they've got my favourite thing a Coffeeshop can have, a terrace! It's only one table and four chairs but it's under a canopy so we can sit out in the rain getting blazed without getting wet. Ideal. The wife sat outside, I venture in and order a gram of La Bomba and two cans of Chocomel. More locals sat at the bar/counter chatting away. Common theme in Haarlem Coffeeshops. As I was super stoned and with the locals sat next to the menu screen, I lost my bottle to ask for a menu picture

Back out into the fresh air to skin up, the La Bomba is nice, nothing to write home about though. Could've sat here all day and people watched, was very close to a main shopping street. People walking by looking at us smoking a spliff and then looking up at the shops signage never gets old to me hahaha. A couple walk by and the gentleman is very interested in what's going on but his lady companion will not entertain it in the slightest

Diagonally across from Coffeeshop Empire is a little side street/alleyway that leads to De Kruidenier Cannabis Takeaway. We wanted to come here on the way back to the train station to get some edibles.

As we get to the door, I notice there's a big cannabis leaf LED on the window of the door. The more I walk around Haarlem the more I notice the differences in the tolerance policy (gedogen) between Amsterdam and Haarlem. Also, De Kruidenier Cannabis Takeaway is open from 7am - 3am.

There is a vast amount of edibles on offer here. All home made too. The edible menu is 17 items long! Incredible really.

I go for 2 chocolate & hazelnut macarons which are €4 each and the wife opts for 2 mango & raspberry gummies (Pate de Fruits) which are €1.50 each. Very reasonable.

With our edibles secured we take the walk back to the train station to go back to Amsterdam.

I'll finish this part of the travelogue with a few thoughts on Haarlem. From the short time we had there, we enjoyed every moment, even the rain lol. We were very disappointed we didn't get to have more time there.

We will have a spring/summer (don't know which year lol) visit so we can actually explore much more of the city and of course go to the youthful Willie Wortel's Sinsemella and blaze up on their roof terrace. I also would've liked to of visited Coffeeshop The Greengrocers and Coffeeshop Maximillian.

We loved it that much that our future visits to Holland will be based in Haarlem from now on.

I love the fact that the tolerance policy is more tolerant. The allowance for Coffeeshops to call themselves Cannabis Shops. The allowance to use the cannabis leaf in the window. The allowance to stay open past 1am. The allowance to have such a variation of edibles other than "space cake".

Final thought on Haarlem is that it feels more "grown up/mature" than Amsterdam. I don't think I can explain it better than that and I don't even know if describing it as more "grown up/mature" even makes sense lol.

Day 2, Part 2 coming soon.
sit back, blaze ganja and chill. 8)
