Baba

Since moved to Baba (formerly Barentsz)

Suprised this shop has not been mentioned on this forum yet - it always seems pretty busy whenever I have walked passed (I guess this is a good sign, but may spoil the atmosphere).

Anyone been here lately? as the latest comments on the main site come from October last year.

I had used this site to (hopefully) find the best places in Amsterdam to hear Trance/Techno on my 1st visit... Baba's was one of the places that was recommended and it made me smile :-)

I heard the finest (and newest) trance around everytime i went in, the staff and people in there were always friendly and the place itself had a decent layout & was a nice size.

If this type of music is your passion like mine then check it out 8)

Some of the coolest people I met in the Dam were in Baba and the souvenir shop. Very friendly and helpful -- at the coffeeshop, an older dutch blond raver lookin dude, about 6' ...at the souvenir shop, a real tall blond dutch guy who was like super helpful. he'd probly eaten some of the shrooms he'd just sold to this other guy at the shop. lol. they stock serious seeds, i wanted to buy some kali mist, but 80 euros is a lot of $. ended up going to sensi later that day. bought 3 grams of hash at baba on my last day...rasul, manali (i think) and some kinda caramello. haven't tried them yet, busy smoking the other stuff I have :P bought some homegrown fantaseeds afghani seeds at the coffeeshop too (30 Euro). planted em yesterday, lets see how they grow!

Tried the Rasul last night. Pretty soft black hash, not the most potent but a good, mild high, good for getting shit done. Smoked it with tobacco in a pipe...

Five of us were over for a few days at the end of May. We spent a lot of time in Baba. The techno is brilliant. It's a great place to sit and chat, or stare at a big metal figure of Ganesh (elephant head and four arms) which presides over the place. The people were very friendly and very efficient. There's cakes, too, and some tea for a mild, but enjoyable, warm buzz.

Nice thing I saw, too: one evening two smartly-dressed middle-aged couples came in, presumably tourists. They deliberated a long time over the choice of cakes, then got comfortable to try them out. Very civilised.
After all, it's only a weed that turns to a flower in your mind.

My first time here also was on my 6th trip. It suprised me in that is was a fairly small place, but we were lucky to get one of the big tables at the back of the shop along with the comfy chairs.

One downer here was although the 4 of us who visited bought 10 drinks and spent €20 of weed in the space of an hour - the staff constantly were peering over at our table and clearing up the mess almost before we made it. One of us said it to be good service although I personally found it a little uncomfortable and they obviously wanted us to leave as soon as possible.

I marked this as I like the shop because it was a nice atmosphere and people buzz (despite the looks from the staff) but I doubt I will visit again kowing of much better shops within a 2 minute walking distance (Coin, Old Church etc)

looked at the menu but found it a little on the expensive side, bought some drinks (also expensive) while i had a smoke. however as i wasn't nailed on mandy i was driven out by the pounding techno thats seethes from this place.

Baba coffee shop

Post by hilian2 »

this is one of my fave shops.
When I first visited in Nov 05 the first thing I saw was a cat curled up on an elephant in the window, a blck & white cat similar to mine. When I realised it was real I felt right at home. The decor was great and the sofas at the back comfy.
The staff were friendly and helpful. We bought some ready rolled which wasn't too good but their muffins were seriously good. We also bought some decent weed too, so all in all this is a must visit whenever we go.

we love this place and it hadn't changed at all. Met Baba the cat and chilled for a bit. Bought some muffins for QD but didn't eat them till we were back in the hotel and I passed out before they had time to kick in (had a great sleep tho  )

Plays Trance music.

Air Con is nice on a hot day.

I love this place first thing in the morning. Great for the first joint and coffee of the day while reading a newspaper. If the joint was good I'll roll another and try the Dutch newspaper with the second 1 lol.

I used to hate house and trance music but thanks to Baba now I love it! Great shop, suberb cakes and very friendly (and pleasant to the view) staff. The decoration is brilliant and the music is awesome. There are several big tables to confraternize with foreign dope-addicts, which is very cool. The cofeeshop also has really cool bongos on the tables.
Will be coming back there when I can. This is the best one I've visited so far. 8)
